Olex2 is a powerful GUI for structure solution and refinement. This manual only briefly touches on many of the features you can use to solve, refine, model and display your structures. Over time you will discover many tricks and shortcuts not presented here. There are many excellent resources for help with Olex2.

 

Click on the “home” icon  to return to the Olex2 home screen. At the bottom of this screen are links to John Warren’s Olex2 xForum (the overall forum is an excellent resource for all manner of crystallographic questions), a searchable command manual, the original paper describing Olex2, and the Olex2 website.

 

The crystallographic community is small and generally friendly. Old-timers are usually willing to help out new-comers with even the most basic questions. Often throughout this guide you find the words “consult an expert.” This is a mantra that will serve you well as you work through your structures. Crystallography (as with most science) is not done in a vacuum, unless you are doing ultra-low pressure work, I suppose. Seek out advice from your advisers, staff crystallographers or internet forums. You will most assuredly find someone who can get you the help you need.
